Ruthnie Angrand
Syracuse, New York
Ms. Angrand displays hard work and dedication to the City of Syracuse municipality and Syracuse residents on a regular basis. She juggles a lot for the City and has managed multiple projects on her own that could easily need a team of 2-4 people. She oversees a number of individuals, processes and events that are technically not under her purview, and she shoots to be and do her best which includes working late and on the weekends to make sure everything is completed.
The Local Bee
Draper, Utah
Draper locals Shawna Borg and Natalie Watson founded “The Local Bee” to share their joy for service in the community and unite it with their love for supporting local charities and businesses. Every month, the partner with a local charity to fulfill a specific need, host a simple monthly service opportunity to participate in while highlighting local restaurants, shops, businesses and organizations. Last month they partnered with “For the Kids” and together with Draper friends and businesses, collected and donated 5,860 meals. That amount provided 732 complete weekend meal kits for kids.
Battalion Chief Kevin Holt

Mr. Leslie was once homeless himself and understands the struggles of homeless people firsthand and has become a tireless and effective advocate in the Toledo area and in more than a dozen states where Veterans Matter now operates.

Mayor Jason L. Shelton
Tupelo, Mississippi
There is phrase we that we use in Tupelo-the Tupelo Spirit. It’s a spirit of community leadership, cooperation and servanthood-in essence, it’s “going the extra mile.” Our city is full of these selfless citizens who are always available to do whatever is needed. We celebrate two citizens who exemplify that spirit-Jason Martin, Tupelo/Lee County Hunger Coalition and Community Outreach Task Force committee member, who has done great work in the way of food insecurity in Tupelo.
He has especially gone above and beyond during the Covid-19 pandemic to reach children and families needing food (specifically children who depended on school meals); and Leticia Gassaway, El Centro and Community Outreach Task Force committee member, she continues to serve as a wonderful liaison and support for the Latina community in Tupelo. I thank them for giving their time, talents, and resources to sustain and enhance the City of Tupelo.
Cherron Jones

Cherron Jones, director of Urban Unity Community Development in Detroit, extends her concern for community to Southfield where she resides. Ms. Jones has given time and resources to help host the “Kneel to Heal” event in June and helped the Mayor’s office organize 2020 Census events. Earlier this year, Speedy was recognized for volunteering his time and effort to our Canton Police Dept by providing the sound system for their events for many years. In addition, our Main Street program and city events could not function without Speedy’s help. Speedy and his team at Speedy Productions have provided the sound setup for countless events, such as First Fridays, July 4th celebrations, the Canton Farmers Market and many others. More importantly, Speedy is often the first to arrive and the last to leave, pitching in to volunteer or help his fellow citizens in any way possible.
Joe Davis
Auburn, Alabama
Joe Davis is an advocate and champion for those who are in need. Soon after Joe became the director of Outreach and Mission at Auburn United Methodist Church, the tornadoes that killed 23 people in Lee County struck our area. Joe was essential in partnering churches, businesses and community so that home repairs could occur and families in need could take steps toward healing and hope. In late 2019, Joe began helping our church and community with conversations and education concerning racial reconciliation. Then in the Spring 2020 when the pandemic hit our area, Joe worked with the Food Bank of East Alabama to set up new outreach of food distribution in the parking lot of Auburn UMC so that those living with food insecurities could have supplies to meet basic needs.
Jani Price
Auburn, Alabama
Almost as soon as East Alabama Medical Center admitted its first patient with COVID-19 on March 16, 2020, the congregation at Auburn United Methodist Church set up a 24-hour prayer chain. One church member, Jani Price, took it a step further by organizing an on-going event dubbed Park and Pray on the top level of the hospital’s parking deck. Through the magic of social media, the parking deck was packed each day at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. This meaningful movement by Price in 2020 follows her actions in 2019 when she coordinated the “Mend the Heart 2019 Tornado Relief Benefit” which raised $78,000 after a rural community next to Auburn was devastated by two tornadoes that left 23 people dead, destroyed 200 homes and caused substantial damage to another 150 homes.
Mayor Jim Kenney
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
“The COVID-19 pandemic and the events over the past seven months have highlighted just how strong the spirit of service is within Philadelphia. Volunteers became essential personnel, and Philadelphians stepped up in a way that exemplified what it means for us to be the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection. Our volunteers go the extra mile-and beyond, working towards building better and safer communities for all, and they are the reason why Philly is such a great city.” – Mayor Jim Kenney, City of Philadelphia
Eleanor Krusell
Boynton Beach, Florida
“I would like to cite Eleanor Krusell for going the extra mile, without her work informing our residents we would be at a disadvantage.” – Mayor Steven B. Grant, Esq.
Donna Smith
Middlesboro, Kentucky
Donna is our local energizer bunny; she is never still and always working on making our gardens and streetscape beautiful and fresh. She is the driving force behind our beautifully decorated fountain as well as any decorations that are presented in the downtown area and does this as a total volunteer.
She totally represents the saying, “If you want something done, asked the busiest person.”
Jay Shoffner
Middlesboro, Kentucky
Over the last 10 years Mr. Shoffner has taken several buildings in our downtown area and repurposed them to allow for commercial use in the ground floor and apartment use in the upper floors. He has in many cases taken buildings that no one else would buy and thru his own initiative and investment created a place where both businesses and renters want to live and work.
He has moved his personal business to one of the buildings that he repurposed to show his commitment to the downtown area.
Tom Busic
Middlesboro, Kentucky
Mr. Busic served on the Middlesboro Police force for 20 years and just recently retired as Chief of Police. Over his 20-year tenure he provided assistance to all residents of Middlesboro equally and fairly.
He was always available to discuss any issues with the residents of our city and was fair and reasonable with any request. He exemplified what you would expect for an extra mile person.
Linda Sorensen
Dubuque, Iowa
Linda has served as an AmeriCorps for the City of Dubuque’s AmeriCorps Program since 2016. This year marks her 4th and final year of service as an Academic Reading Tutor with the program. Linda has also been active in volunteering separate from her role as an AmeriCorps member- serving with political campaigns and with her church regularly.
During Linda’s AmeriCorps Service, she has worked with hundreds of students at Eisenhower Elementary, helping them improve their literacy and social skills. Linda has been a vital part of our AmeriCorps Program’s success for the last 4 years! Thank you for your service, Linda!
Mayor Jan Kulmann
Thornton, Colorado
“Thornton is always trying to provide the best service possible to our residents and businesses, but we also know that our efforts are often capped at what we can budget for.
It’s then the volunteers who come in and take the efforts and service to the next level – filling needs that many cities just can’t. We celebrate and honor those individuals who commit their time and energy for these efforts.”
Mayor Frank C. Ortis
Pembroke Pines, Florida
“This very difficult year has inspired many to ‘go the extra mile’ in helping others through food distributions, as first responders, working in our health facilities and looking out for others in our community by doing simple, yet impactful, actions like shopping for the elderly or checking in on those who were alone,” said Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “Heroes abound in our community, and I am so grateful that we have grown stronger and even closer through these trying times.”
Mayor Gavin Buckley
Annapolis, Maryland
“This has been a tough year and so much of what we have been able to accomplish has been because of volunteers who willingly give of their time, energy, effort and love. There are so many Annapolis residents who go the Extra Mile. I am grateful for all they’ve done in 2020!”
Mayor Christophe E. Jenkins
West Bend, Wisconsin
“The City of West Bend values all of the non-profit organizations and volunteers that rise to the occasion every day to donate their time, talents and funding for worthy causes. As Mayor of the City of West Bend, and a non-profit Board President myself, I want to thank everyone in our community who goes the “extra mile” to serve those in need”.
