Locals honored in Binghamton for going ‘the extra mile’ for others
Binghamton Mayor Matthew T. Ryan was among 362 mayors who heeded the word, Anderson said.
Then Ryan went an extra mile, declaring not Extra Mile Day, but rather Extra Mile Month.
On Nov. 15, he honored four women and their groups for contributions made to the quality of life in Binghamton: Mary Webster and the Safe Streets Commission, Janet McHenry and the North Side Neighborhood Assembly, Marylou Rutkowski and the Sunflower Park Steering Committee and Christine Cebula and VINES (Volunteers Improving Neighborhood Environments).

Extra Mile America Rides through Utah, across Country
Shawn Anderson rides through Price last Friday as part of his project Extra Mile America. Starting in San Francisco, Calif., Anderson will eventually make his way to Boston, Mass. Along the way, he hopes to stop at 21 cities to find inspirational stories about going the extra mile. Anderson said the stories he hopes to gather include subjects ranging from careers, relationships, encouragement and communities. Upon reaching Boston, he will pick 10 of the most inspirational stories and award their owners $1,000 each. In Utah, he said he stopped in Salt Lake and found no less than nine people who were going the extra mile. Though Anderson was suppressed by Utah’s sparse populations, he was no less committed as he made his way south to Interstate 70. [Read more…]
