At this month's monthly meeting, the Borough Assembly approved a resolution dedicating November 1 to be "Extra Mile Day."

An annual proclamation, the designation is meant to encourage community members to "go the extra mile" in personal effort, volunteerism and service. That can manifest itself in many ways, with a number of opportunities coming up this holiday season. Representing the town's collective churches, the Wrangell Ministerial Association will be holding its 15th annual Thanksgiving Basket distribution on November 20. Each year the drive collects resources in order to provide traditional holiday meals to those who could use them, be they single-parent households, multiple member families, those coping with illness or catastrophe, or individuals. Heroes and their contributions are being recognized in all 50 states. In Canton, Ohio, brothers Robert and Patrick Harper made sure that the skies were not dark on the 4th of July. They led the charge in raising $33,000 to make sure that Canton had fireworks on Independence Day. In Columbus, Mississippi, Tjajuan Boswell, known as the “Rose of Columbus,” highlights the beauty of her city by planting trees, shrubs and flowers throughout. Arnold, Missouri, heroes Omar Ruiz, a police officer, worked countless hours heading up emergency operations during Arnold’s horrific flood, and Teresa Kohut, the Recreation Center Supervisor, led the charge to make sure that volunteers were adequately fed and cared for during the same flood. Speck is the artistic director of Black Hills Community Theatre and Rapid City Central High School's theatre department. Rochester City Code Chapter 35 section 1-A strictly outlaws plastering posters of pole dancers on the city's poles. It also forbids hanging signs that say "Cash for Diabetic Test Strips" or "Need a blessing? I buy Houses Ca$h" to the city's lamp posts, hydrants, trees, shrubs, telephone poles, fire alarm boxes or any other street appurtenance.

This law is trod upon by party promoters, home flippers and whoever is working the diabetes paraphernalia black market. In the 19th Ward, you don't call the cops to deal with the resulting visual clutter. You take matters into your own hands. (See video)...[Read more...]

MOSCOW, ID - Moscow Mayor Bill Lambert has proclaimed Saturday at "Extra Mile Day" in Moscow.

It's a day to recognize those in the community who 'go the extra mile' on a regular basis to make life in Moscow better. Like a charity volunteer, or a teacher, or a police officer.

Whitefish has designating Nov. 1 as Extra Mile Day to honor the work of one Whitefish couple and a local nonprofit medical clinic.

“I urge each individual in the community to take time on this day to not only go the extra mile in his or her own life, but also acknowledge all those who are inspiration in their efforts and commitment to make their organizations, families, community, country or world a better place,” Whitefish Mayor John Muhlfeld said.

On Saturday, residents are encouraged to go the extra mile for family, friends and the community as part of the Extra Mile Day initiative.

Extra Mile Day was developed by Extra Mile America – a movement that started in 2009 to promote positive changes in communities nationwide – and its founder Shawn Anderson.

Fort Wayne is one of 23 cities that has been a part of the initiative since the beginning, and it now joins 516 other cities in making the 2014 declaration.

Binghamton Mayor Matthew T. Ryan was among 362 mayors who heeded the word, Anderson said.

Then Ryan went an extra mile, declaring not Extra Mile Day, but rather Extra Mile Month.

Extra Mile America rides through Utah, across country

Shawn Anderson rides through Price last Friday as part of his project Extra Mile America. Starting in San Francisco, Calif., Anderson will eventually make his way to Boston, Mass. Along the way, he hopes to stop at 21 cities to find inspirational stories about going the extra mile. Anderson said the stories he hopes to gather include subjects ranging from careers, relationships, encouragement and communities. Upon reaching Boston, he will pick 10 of the most inspirational stories and award their owners $1,000 each. In Utah, he said he stopped in Salt Lake and found no less than nine people who were going the extra mile.
